This is only a “short” listing of the opportunities we offer into the backcountry. Trips listed are merely suggestions. A backcountry trip should be tailored to fit your needs, your interests (hiking?, rafting?, fishing?, mountaineering?…..?) and your skill level. You should look over a map, peruse our photo albums and choose the area that best fits your interests. Part of the adventure is planning your own trip and picking your own itinerary. Skolai Pass is the drop-off spot for the popular Goat Trail that ends at Glacier Creek, by way of unmatched terrain and spectacular views. As you hike along the trail you will be afforded astounding views of the Russell Glacier, 10,926 ft. Mt. Sulzer and the 16,000 foot Twaharpies of the University Range. In addition to the rugged mountain terrain you will have a chance to explore the “Hole-in-the-Wall” glacier area, catch a glimpse of the thunderous Chitistone Falls and cross through country that almost guarantees a large game sighting. The Goat Trail is a challenging 25 miles including steep scree slopes and creek and river crossings. Recommended travel time is 4-7+ days depending on how many day trips are desired. You can study a map and find other destination possibilities from Skolai Pass such as Doubtful Creek or Wolverine. Skolai Pass is also a recommended spot for base-camping and day-hiking.
Skolai RT: $360 Goat Trail (Skolai DO/Glacier Cr PU): $280
As the end of the Goat Trail, Glacier Creek offers more than just a terminus for the hike. Equipped with a small public-use cabin, Glacier Creek makes a comfortable spot for basecamping/day-hiking or self-tailored destination trips. This area offers a spectacular day-hike up the Glacier Creek valley toward the Twaharpies Glacier. The valley is flanked by amazing rock formations and glaciated cirques with astounding views of the impressive University Range. In addition, there are plenty of other side-trips and areas to explore to keep you busy for several days. The Goat Trail may also be hiked from Glacier Creek to Skolai Pass. For the same price you can visit Peavine Bar across the creek. Peavine Bar is similar to the Glacier Creek area but is equipped with two cabins (one of which has six bunks), a handicap accessible outhouse, and horseshoes.
Glacier RT: $210 Goat Trail (Glacier Cr DO/Skolai PU): $280
After an exciting landing alongside the Nizina Glacier, step out of the plane to explore the surrounding rocky terrain or head toward the glacier. Either way, you are surrounded by the crisp, fresh waters of the area--from rushing creeks to iceberg-filled glacial lakes. Opt to hike further into the high country by following a unique creek bed up to more mountainous terrain. Self-tailor a trip to be picked up at a nearby landing area. You may want to hike to the Rohn Glacier or find a route between Doubtful Creek and Wolverine. The Doubtful Creek area offers many opportunities for day-hikes or longer backpacking trips.
Doubtful Cr. RT: $260 Skolai DO/Doubtful PU: $310
Getting dropped off across the glacier from Doubtful Creek offers adventurers several different options. Obviously very similar to the Doubtful Creek area, the Nizina Glacier landing strip also allows access to the Regal Glacier and the West Fork Glacier, opportunities to challenge yourself on higher, rough terrain. The Nizina Glacier strip is also the put-in for rafting trips down the Nizina River. There is a public-use cabin within a short distance of the landing strip. The Nizina Glacier is a perfect spot to settle in and set up a base camp for myriad day-hiking options.
Nizina Glacier RT: $260
Approaching the landing-strip perched on the Mile High Cliffs high above the braided Nizina River, witness magnificent waterfalls trundling from steep rocky shoots. The surrounding canyon walls are striated with geological and mining history, just waiting for your eyes to unravel the mysteries. Nikolai Ridge offers amazing views with tons of opportunities to explore the towering rock walls or just gaze in awe at the mountain vistas of Mt. Blackburn and the dramatic University Range skirted by the Nizina River. Enjoy a leisurely day-hiking trip or find your own route for a backpacking excursion.
Nikolai Ridge RT: $250
Also known as the Chitistone Plateau, this geologically rich area offers a twist to the Goat Trail with an opportunity to hike from Skolai Pass to this high alpine plateau. Traverse high mountain terrain with views of Chitistone Gorge, “Hole-in-the-Wall” glacier, 16, 420 ft. Mt. Bona and 15,600 ft. Mt. Churchill. Wildlife viewing possibilities are abundant, as well as fossil and geode hunting opportunities. Wolverine Mt. is also a great area for day-hikes. The trip from Skolai to Wolverine is a challenging traverse through steep scree, wet areas and involves stream crossings. The 20 mile hike can take 3-8 days, dependent on day trips desired. Trips from Wolverine Mt. to Glacier Creek or Doubtful Creek are also an option.
Wolverine RT: $300 Wolverine DO/Doubtful PU: $280
Landing at the base of these towering, folded and striated citadels of natural history offers a trekker access to the Nizina River and a whole world of exploration. Feast on the rich geological history of the area as you let your sense of adventure take you where you want to go--day-tripping or overnight.
Mile High Cliffs RT: $210
With easy glacier access and awesome views, the Fosse has an abundant offering. Day-trip options allow exploration and truly amazing views of the Kennicott Glacier and 16,390 ft. Mt. Blackburn. Terrain varies from rocky alpine slopes to glacial ice. Its proximity to McCarthy, the stunning views and abundant short hikes from the airstrip make the Fosse a perfect spot to spend the day if you don’t have enough time for an overnight trip into the backcountry. Or, go for an overnight trip and explore on your own or contact Kennicott Wilderness Guides for information on guided trips from the Fosse back to the historic mining town of Kennicott.
Fosse RT: $195
*Lakina:
An amazing valley of rock and ice giants, the Lakina offers exciting hiking and stunning views of one of the area’s most prominent buttresses, 10,000 ft. Castle Peak. Hiking up the Lakina River toward the Lakina Glacier or into any one of the many the alpine passes accessible from the Lakina Valley will surely astound any backpacker or day-tripper. Be on the lookout for moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. The Lakina Valley is the perfect starting point for a number of challenging overnight trips with views of some of the park’s most dramatic peaks. Destination possibilities include Kuskulana Pass, the Fosse, Mill Creek or Kennicott. These trips range from 10 to 30 or more miles.Lakina RT: $370 Lakina DO/Kuskulana Pass PU: $535
(Chitina Glacier): Paired with Jake’s Bar, Chitina or Cordova, this area is a river rafter’s dream. Alone it is an explorer’s paradise; offering high rocky cliffs, low-lying river gorges, waterfalls, large game sightings, glacial moraine and extensive views of surrounding unnamed peaks (sometimes a glance at the complex icy expanse of the park’s highest peak, Mt. Logan). To tie up this package, there is a public-use cabin near the strip. Rafters begin at the head waters of the Chitina river and head toward Jake’s Bar through 40+ miles of some of the area’s most stunning views: the Hawkins and Barnard glaciers and the surrounding mountains; the immense braided Chitina River itself; Gibraltar Hill (an impressive rock island smack in the middle of the river). Look for bison along the river and Dall sheep and goats on the bluffs above. Hikers may tailor their own style of trip--from moderate to strenuous day exploration, to challenging overnight destinations such as a trip to Ram Glacier.Hubert’s Landing RT: $380

Rafting prices are based on load size and number of loads)This small yet impressive and accessible glacier is situated just 12 or so miles east of Hubert’s Landing and offers ready access to glacial moraine and hiking on rocky terrain in the same general area as Hubert’s Landing. Ram Glacier is perfect for day hiking or an awesome 12+ mile trip to or from Hubert’s. Allow 2-6 days and plenty of energy for playing in and around everything that the area offers.

Jake’s Bar landing strip and public-use cabins perch next to the braided Chitina River and offer river rafters a drop-off or pick-up spot. Hikers gain comfortable access for day and loop trips, from the cabins to the Chitina River, or roughing it towards the slopes of MacColl Ridge. Or, find your own trip through the surrounding areas. Keep an eye out for large game!

Fishing has never been quite like this! The blue-green waters of Tebay Lakes are home to fish and host a variety of wildlife as well. With access to day-hiking, take a leisurely trip into this wilderness for relaxing fishing and exploration. Check out nearby Gillam Falls and other hidden jewels and explore the seemingly never-ending lake shore, or simply bask in the towering views while you munch on abundant wild blueberries.
Tebay Lakes RT: $400
An expansive area along the White River with views of 11,000 ft. Mt. Sulzer, the Russell Glacier, Mt. Churchill and 16,400 ft. Mt. Bona, Solo Creek offers many options for base-camping and exploring the White River Valley and surrounding lakes (with some fishing available). Solo Creek also offers opportunities for longer backpacking trips. Head 25 miles by trail toward the old mining settlement of Chisana, with cabins to stay in along the way. Keep an eye out for caribou and other large game. Horsefeld is also an option from Solo Cr. Or, you may opt to try the triangle between Solo Creek, Horsefeld and Chisana via the Beaver Creek Trail.

Enjoy this historic mining town from the comfort of a public use cabin, or venture out into the surrounding areas for day-hiking or overnight trips to explore the mining artifacts and history dotting this spectacular terrain. Check out an overnight loop trip through the Gold Hills or consider hiking to with Solo Cr., Horsefeld or Chicken City.Chisana RT: $400 Chisana DO/Horsefeld PU: $475
Expansive country with relatively easy travel, even through low-lying regions, makes a trip to Horsefeld an opportunity that remains unmatched. You might choose to set up a base-camp and revel in the vastness of the land before hiking to either Braye Lakes or Rock Lake to take advantage of some great backcountry fishing. Trips from Horsefeld to the historic mining town of Chisana (where public use cabins are available), or the unpopulated Chicken City, offer an experience similar to those of the old mining days. Hike along the historic Beaver Creek Trail through impressive terrain with loads of history and expansive views. The trail to Chisana is approximately 18-20 miles and can be expected to take about 4-7 days, depending on speed of travel and day-trips desired.
Horsefeld RT: $550 Horsefeld DO/Chicken City PU: $515
Chicken City offers day-hiking in an area relatively near Chisana, above tree-line, at an elevation of 5,000 feet. A longer hike for the ambitious could lead you through varying terrain and past fishing areas to Chisana, Horsefeld, Solo Cr. or a loop trip to another destination.
Chicken City RT: $ 480 Chicken City DO/Chisana PU: $440
*Tana:
The Tana is a unique area, accented by sand dunes, numerous unnamed peaks and the braids of the Tana River. The Tana offers challenging day-hiking and backpacking through the surrounding area or the opportunity to set off down the Tana River in a raft. The trip down-river will go through the difficult Tana Canyon rapids to the Tana’s confluence with the Chitina River near Jake’s Bar (equipped with public-use cabins). A hiker’s trip starting at the Tana airstrip may continue in any direction. Check your map or ask us for more details on longer hikes in the area with strenuous and challenging terrain (from glacial travel to difficult river crossings) and rewarding views of the scattered towering peaks surrounding the Bagley Icefield and the jumbled ice of numerous glaciated areas. Or, choose to spend a day or overnight trip taking it easy at the easily accessible and unique Tana Sand Dunes.Tana-Cross RT: $330 (Per person rate. This landing area gets its name from the stunning milky green glacial lake which is a day hike from the landing strip alongside Granite Creek. Surrounded by the towering Granite Range and the spires and hanging glaciers of Thompson Ridge, this area offers so many opportunities base-campers as well as backpackers. Try a hike north up Twelvemile Creek into unnamed peaks. If your skills permit, venture on a longer trip into the expanses of the Jefferies Glacier; over the Tana Glacier to Iceberg Lake or beyond; or take on the challenging trek all the way to the Bagley Icefield for immense views of surrounding towering peaks and a chance to really test your mountaineering skills. Backpacking trips with glacial travel vary in length from 15 to 60 miles or more and from moderate to strenuous in difficulty.
Ross Green Lake RT: $380 Ross Green DO/Iceberg PU: $380
A sparkling jewel in the midst of an icy kingdom, Iceberg Lake lives up to its name. Spend a wonderful day or two hiking around the area exploring and discovering the lake or set off for an adventurous trip into the wilds. Lengths and times for destination trips depend on your experience and adventuresome spirit…but the possibilities are virtually endless! You could travel over the Tana Glacier to Ross Green Lake; head out to the historic Bremner mine area with its alluring history, cache of artifacts and public-use cabin; or continue on past Bremner to the Fan Glacier strip. Landing at Iceberg Lake also gives access (via challenging glacier travel) to the Bagley Icefield and many surrounding peaks. Trips from Iceberg range from moderate 15 mile trips to strenuous and challenging 35+ miles with varying terrain and glacier travel.
Iceberg Lake RT: $380 Iceberg DO/Bremner PU: $380

The allure of this drop-off location extends well beyond the intrigue of exploring the old mining settlement and other surrounding artifacts. With a public-use cabin, this is a perfect spot to plan a relaxing trip. Day-hikes and short trips venture towards Golconda Creek and the North Fork River and possibly all the way to the North Fork Glacier, or scrambling in exploration through one of the many pockets in the surrounding landscape. Take a look at the terrain and plan your own overnight trip. If distance and excitement are in your schedule, look towards the Fan Glacier a 22 mile challenging backpack south over high land and glaciers and through stunning country in 3-7+ days.Bremner RT: $ 380 Bremner DO/Fan Glacier PU: $415
Landing in a wide open sandy valley surrounded by hanging glaciers and impressive peaks leaves many options for exploration. This area provides glacier access, easy-going hiking in high-alpine areas and craggy mountains to explore. If you are interested in a longer, challenging backpacking trip this might be the perfect place to start. Heading to the Bremner mine area or continuing on toward Iceberg Lake or Ross Green Lake offers a long, challenging hike over impressive and varied terrain.
