Traveling up Dan

Pyramid Peak.
Alaska's backcountry
is virtually devoid of trails, making good maps and skilled navigation a key
asset for any backcountry trip. You may, though, find yourself traveling
along one of several trails created by animal traffic. As you explore
the spectacular scenery and take in the awe-inspiring mountain vistas keep an
eye out for both large game and small animals. Trails may also exist
that are remnants of the mining days. Along these trails you may want to
watch for evidence of this culture in the form of artifacts, mining shafts and
even mining camps and cabins. Many of the cabins are recently renovated
and open to public use. Hikers and campers are encouraged to take
advantage of the taste of "backcountry luxury" and insight into the
mining days that the cabins provide.
Glacial expanses and
their glistening blue pools offer hikers relief from Wrangell-St. Elias's
"sweltering" 80 degree days.
